Every day, people bring momentos to the Wall and leave them. At night, the park service comes and picks them up and stores them. It is touching to see some of the things that people leave. They write letters, leave a beer or cigarettes, or something personal that nobody knows why they left it. I love looking at them.
This brings back a memory of when I wore one of these POW bracelets when I was in high school. I remember after the War was over, the serviceman (Lt. Charles Stackhouse) who was on my bracelet was released from a POW prison and I watched him get off the plane when he came back to the United States. It's a very fond memory. I still have that bracelet.
I love being here.
